Rooiels, sometimes written as Rooi-Els, is a small coastal village tucked along the eastern edge of False Bay in South Africa’s Western Cape. Part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, it lies beneath the dramatic slopes of Klein-Hangklip mountain and looks out across a rugged stretch of ocean and shoreline. The settlement was formally declared a township in 1948 and takes its name from the red alder tree, known in Afrikaans as “rooiels,” which once grew more commonly in the area. Unlike many towns that have developed into bustling tourist hubs, Rooiels has remained deliberately low-key. Its gravel roads, absence of streetlights, and modest scale reflect the community’s deep commitment to conservation and to living closely with the natural environment.

The estuary where the Rooi-Els River meets the sea supports a rich variety of life and provides a sheltered swimming area, while the coastline offers striking views of False Bay and the mountains that frame it.

Wildlife is part of everyday life in Rooiels. Chacma baboons are frequent visitors to the village, and rock hyrax, small antelope, and African clawless otters can often be seen in the surrounding terrain. Birdwatchers regard Rooiels as one of the best places to find Cape endemics such as the Cape Rockjumper, Cape Sugarbird, and Orange-breasted Sunbird, while raptors like Verreaux’s eagles nest in the nearby cliffs.
